Volcanic Activity As of September 10, Showa 20 (1945), there were 17 relatively active volcanic activities during the two-year period. To commemorate this volcanic activity, this new volcanic mountain with an altitude of 398 meters was designated as a special natural monument in 1957 and named Showa Shinzan. To this day, it is still a growing "new mountain", and white smoke can still be seen constantly erupting from the reddish-brown mountains. The bear ranch located near the entrance of the Showa Shinzan Ropeway is home to more than 100 purebred Hokkaido brown bears. Brown bears are the largest wild mammals in Hokkaido.
